    My Memories
    Delrae Thomas Sowards
    Granddaughter

Memories make the time seem like just yesterday, yet make you yearn for a time so long ago.
    Grandpa Earl Jensen
One of my most vivid memories of Grandpa is a sad memory yet a memory of testimony, faith and encouragement. Grandpa was so very sick before he died. I remember one Sunday when all of Grandpa’s daughters and their families were gathered at his bedside. I do not recall the particular day other than that it was a Sunday, but it was not to long before he passed away. He lay in bed and I remember sitting on my father's lap listening to him talk of various memories. I remember him talking about many gospel principles and the adults being engrossed in a very Gospel oriented conversation. It was so fascinating to me. I loved to hear them talk and discuss the gospel. Many of the grandchildren who were of course all younger than I (I being the oldest) were outside playing. I remember him calling Denny, Vernon and I to his bedside. He talked to us about the gospel. I told him I was afraid of the second coming and I remember him telling me not to be. He told me what a glorious time it would be for the righteous Latter-Day Saints. There were many other things he told us and I had remembered the event but not the specifics until one day I was going through some old MIA papers I had written to earn some felt patches for my Primary Bandello. I ran across what I had written down, that following summer 1966, about this particular day with my Grandfather just shortly after he had passed away.
    I wrote:
“My grandfather was a very very good man. He believed very strongly in the Lord and in the church.
I remember one night he took me and two of my cousins by his side and explained every part of the gospel. My Grandfather was in very much pain. It was very hard for him to move and even to talk. He told us that the Lord had told him the day he was to die, and he also told him that he would be one of those men who were to build the temple in Missouri. He was told he would walk again on the earth during the millennium. My Grandfather told us that he would see us soon and to always remember him and the Lord especially.”
I had indeed remembered these things but did not remember them as having been said at that particular time. To my knowledge Grandpa Jensen had never had a Patriarchal Blessing. I have often thought, I wish I would have asked him more about his talk with the Lord.
I remember the striped bib overalls Grandpa always wore. I remember the tall swing set in his back yard and the merry-go-round he had made. I remember he was kind and gentle. He was good to my mama.
I remember Grandpa seemed to be able to go to sleep in his chair in the living room in an instant. Grandma was always yelling, “Wake up, Earl!” I also heard her say many times, “Oh, Earl!”
Grandpa liked to Bowl. I remember him taking me over to the Bowling alley in La Jara to Tina’s little café in the bowling alley and buying me a Mexican Hot Dog. It consisted of a hot dog and grated cheese rolled up in a fried corn tortilla. I still like those today and always think of Grandpa when I eat them.
I also remember Grandpa Jensen getting after Denny, Vernon and I for playing in the ditch after he told us not to. We told him we couldn’t drown. He picked me up by the heels and said, “Oh yes you can” and then stuck my head in the water and held me there till I thought I was going to drown! I ran all cold and wet back to Grandma’s house where Mama, Grandma, Aunt Jerry and Aunt Margaret were talking and visiting and telling them what Grandpa had done to me! They said “Good for him, did you learn your lesson? Stay away from those ditches!” I was shocked. They didn’t care a bit about what he had done to me. Now being much older I know he loved me and was teaching me a very important lesson.
