Thomas Olson, D.D.S., 66, Plymouth, Minn., died peacefully July 24, 2004, at his home with his wife, Linda, and daughter, Erika, at his side, after suffering a long and difficult illness. Services will be held at 2 p.m. today, July 28, at Mount Olivet Lutheran Church, Serley Chapel, 5025 Knox Ave. S., Minneapolis. A social gathering will follow at the church.

Tom was born and grew up in South Minneapolis and loved to play along the Minnehaha River and ride his bike to swim in Lake Nokomis. He enjoyed playing pick-up hockey and baseball and was a wonderful skater. He attended Washburn High School, graduating in 1960. He served in the Marine Reserve from 1960 to 1964. He graduated from Augsburg College with a double major in history and biology and a minor in chemistry. He taught high school chemistry and biology in western Minnesota and Minneapolis for three years. He then graduated from the University of Minnesota Dental School in 1971. He practiced dentistry in Bismarck for 16 years and was president of the North Dakota Dental Association for two years. He then practiced dentistry for another 15 years in Hamel and Plymouth, Minn.

Tom was enthusiastic about many things. He flew a Cessna 172 airplane for several years including two wonderful flights to Alaska from Bismarck. He had a great love of history and art and classical music. He knew the life histories and personal facts about politicians, artists and composers. He could tell you just about anything that was happening in any part of the world politically and culturally for any year dating back to the B.C.s. You would have thought he had lived during those times in many countries. Later in life, he took up bike riding on bike trails with all the enthusiasm which he had for his other life interests.

He had a great curiosity to learn as much as he could about any topic. He enjoyed snorkeling and birdwatching and knew all the names of the tropical fish and various bird species. He also created wonderful flower gardens. Tom was passionate about sharing his vast knowledge with his children and stepchildren and always had books to share with everyone he met.

He enjoyed several trips to Europe including Moscow, Rome, Vienna and Paris. He knew the history of the areas and made it come alive for anyone traveling with him.

He will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.

He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Linda (Seaman); his children, Erika and Tristan Olson; his stepchildren, David (Erika) Fairbairn and Josie (Paul) Reichwald; three grandchildren; his mother, Grace Olson; his brothers, Tod (Jackie) Olson and Robert (Karen) Olson, M.D.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Theodore A. Olson, Ph.D.

Grace Lundberg Olson was born in Minneapolis, July 2, 1907, the second eldest of five children. Her father, Carl Elfton Lundberg, came to America from Sweden at age 16. Her mother, Anna Albertina Anderson, was from a second generation Swedish family in Spring Garden, MN. A stand-out student, Grace attended Minnehaha Academy (Class of 1924), skipping a grade and graduating at age 16. Grace and her sister Violet (now 102 years old) were stars on the newly formed Minnehaha Girls Basketball Team. Grace dreamed of being a lawyer, but her father would not send a girl to college. However, he did pay for her to attend a business school. She excelled on her first job with the Hedberg Gravel Co. (where the St. Louis Park Byerly's now sits). When transportation problems caused her to look for another position, Grace's boss bought her a car in order to keep her. In 1929 she married Theodore Olson who was to become a University of Minnesota Professor. They were inseparable. Grace typed his Harvard PhD thesis and papers, entertained his colleagues and students, and traveled the world at his side during his sabbatical studies. Grace was president of the Faculty Wives Club, served 30 years as a Chief Election Judge, was an officer in the League of Women Voters, PTA President, Den Mother and a leader in countless other community activities. In retirement, she and Ted continued to travel extensively, visiting scores of countries and all five continents with lifelong friends from Minnehaha Academy. Preceded in death by husband of 73 years, Ted and son, Dr. R. Thomas Olson. Survived by sons, Theodore (Tod) Olson Jr., former Mayor of Long Lake, MN (wife Jackie) and Dr. Robert Olson (wife Karen) of St. Louis Park, MN; 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Memorials preferred to the American Swedish Institute, 2600 Park Ave., Minneapolis, MN 55407-1090. Interment Lakewood Cemetery. Funeral service 2:00 PM Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2007, with visitation 1/2 hour prior to service at: Washburn-McReavy Edina Chapel 952-920-3996 West 50th St. & Hwy 100
