    Liv Ellinor Romslo Nielsen FJOSNE
    Funeral Notice
It is said that a loved child has many names. In addition to Liv, she was also called, mom, tante, Sis and mormor. Indeed, she was loved, admired and respected. She began her life's journey on May 11, 1932 in Sarpsborg, Norway. She was the youngest child of Ellinor and Aage Nielsen. At the age of six, she lost her mother and oldest sister Lillian, losses she had great difficulties to accept her entire life. She attended elementary and high schools in Sarpsborg and graduated high school (gymnasium) with honor. Her elementary class maintained close contact over the years and arranged get-togethers on a regular basis. As often as she could, Liv would attend. During the war years (World War II) Liv would smuggle her school lunch into the local Russian POW camp whenever the occasion allowed. For about a year after high school graduation she worked as a substitute teacher and she discovered her life calling. The following year she headed for Oslo Teacher College in Oslo, Norway. During this time she met her future husband Herlaugr (Harold who was planning to go to Canada. Not a very good prospect. She took a night job as a street car conductor to save up money for her Atlantic crossing. After graduating from Teacher College, she climbed on board M/S Stavangerfjord and headed for Toronto, Ontario, Canada and her future husband. They were married on July 23, 1955 and after a two day honeymoon, she landed a job as a bank teller. It so happened that Liv's sister Elna Fossen and her family lived in Columbus, Ohio. Naturally, the sisters wanted to live closer and in the spring of 1958 the Morris Oxford was loaded up and Liv and husband took off for Columbus, Ohio. Liv got a job with a hotel as a payroll clerk within a few days. During this time she enjoyed the company of her niece Anne Christine and nephew Peer Aage as well as the closeness to her sister. Liv and her husband planned to work their way around the globe. Next step was to go to California and from there to Australia, New Zealand and Cape Town in South Africa (and places in between) and then return to Norway. However, she became pregnant in California and that changed their travel plans. Within two years, Liv gave birth to two wonderful daughters, Lisa Lillian and Heidi Ingeborg. With a new baby, a new car and a new home in Santa Rosa, Liv and her family settled in to enjoy the American dream. By now her sister had moved to California and she added three more children, Erik, James and Ingrid to her family. During this time, Liv and her husband built a cabin at Soda Springs in the Sierra Nevada mountain range. The cabin was a favorite summer and winter retreat. As the children reached school age, Liv returned to her teaching ambition. As time allowed, she enrolled in classes at Santa Rosa Junior College. Later she transferred to Sonoma State University to major in history. Then followed a Masters Degree in Education and in 1972 was hired during the midyear by Sheppard Elementary School in the Roseland School District. When she received her first pay check, she was overwhelmed by her good fortune and said "Now I can enjoy what I am doing, and even get paid for it!" She taught for twenty years, of which she served five years as Principal. As a teacher she received the greatest compliment from her former students. She would receive letters and telephone calls from students she had taught twenty or thirty years ago, telling her what a life changing experience it had been for them to attend her classes. She would remember them all, even their names. Although she never got to circumnavigate the globe, she got to see the five continents, came within 600 miles from the North Pole and would have visited the Antarctic if it had not been for bad flying weather and a hefty price tag. At every opportunity she would visit family and friends in Norway. Her daughters produced three grand children. Lisa's daughter Victoria Christine and Heidi's son Henri Anthony and daughter Angelita Leonora Julia (Analea or Angel for short). When Heidi and her family moved to Redding, we joined her. Heidi suffered through two and a half years of pain, agony and hospital stays before she succumbed. A month before she died her son Henri and Arcata married and in January of 2012 Arcata gave birth to Braedon, a strapping young man. Having elevated Liv to the status of a great grand-motherhood her admiration and love for her great grandson was limitless. Christmas of 2012 was celebrated according to the best tradition. Liv enjoyed the decorations, the food and the company of her family. She even insisted on keeping up the traditional opening of the Christmas dinner, exercising her privilege to take the first bite. The Christmas story was read and Santa Claus arrived with his gifts and after kissing Liv, he returned to his sleigh. In the morning of December 27, Liv experienced breathing difficulties and was brought to the hospital. She was diagnosed with pneumonia and was returned to the assisted living facility in the afternoon. She died at 9:15 the following morning of December 28, 2012. A memorial service is planned for March 23, 2013 at 2790 Pacific Ave. Redding. Please call (530) 222-5002 for further details. Both family and friends feel the void left by her passing. Her memory will stay with us and her love and kindness is her hallmark. Rest in Peace.
