    Clarence O. Durham, Jr.
    1920-2015
Dr. Clarence Orson "Clay" Durham, Jr. PhD geologist, passed away Sunday, April 12, in Houston, Texas, at the age of 94. Clay was born in Victoria, Texas, on October 20, 1920, the son of Clarence Durham, Sr. and Maud Leffland Durham.
Clay's lifetime accomplishments were many. He received a B.S. in geology with honors from the University of Texas in 1942. He earned a professional certificate in meteorology from University of Chicago in 1943 and served as a meteorologist in the Army Air Corps during World War 2. After the war, he continued his education at Columbia University where he was awarded his PhD in geology. Clay joined the faculty at Louisiana State University in 1951 as a professor of geology. He also served as Director of Research for the Louisiana Geological Survey during his tenure at LSU. In 1965 he was named chairman of the LSU Department of Geology, a position that he held until he retired in 1975 to pursue work as a consulting geologist. Clay moved to Houston in 1978 and began a successful career in oil and gas exploration in partnership with ex-student and long time friend Brian Parsons.
Clay's interests were wide-ranging. He had an encyclopedic knowledge of Texas history and loved to read about Texas history, flora and fauna. He had a passion for geology, and some of his daughters' favorite memories were the impromptu geological lectures during road trips of any natural phenomena that he found interesting. Clay was well-known and well-loved by many. His former LSU students held him in great esteem. Many say their lives were forever changed by their association with this remarkable man.
Clay is survived by his former wife, Louise Durham, daughters Evelyn Durham and Amy Durham Wang, future son-in-law Matthew Harding, son-in-law Warren Wang, and three grandchildren - Joshua, Sarah, and Matthew Wang.

(Research):LEFFLAND, JULES CARL (1854-1924). Jules Carl Leffland, architect, son of Carl Wilhelm and Julia Welhelmine (Olsen) Leffland, was born at Usserød, Denmark, on September 9, 1854. He attended public school and then went to the Institute of Technology of Copenhagen, where he received his architectural training. In November 1879 he married Emilie Sophie Struck of Copenhagen, whose father owned a famous resort hotel, the Horsholm, on the Baltic Sea. To this marriage were born seven children. The Lefflands were converted from Lutheranism to Presbyterianism before leaving Denmark.
Leffland immigrated to Texas in 1886 at the urging of a Bee County rancher and friend, Viggo Koehler. His first jobs involved moving homes from Indianola inland to Cuero after the devastating hurricane of 1886 (see HURRICANES). By 1910, from an office in Victoria, Leffland had designed and supervised the construction of at least eighty structures. He designed churches, schools, banks, city halls, hotels, and residences in an area from Wharton to Kingsville. Many of these structures are extant and document the growth and prosperity in the region between 1888 and 1910. Victoria, Leffland's adopted hometown, has numerous examples of the buildings he designed. Most of these structures are located in and around the Main Street area in the old part of town. Nazareth Academyqv (1904), a large, Alsatian-design church school, is readily visible across from City Hall on Main Street. The J. E. Ryan building (1910), Bianchi's Pharmacy (1910), and the Hauschild Cigar Factory (1918) are all brick commercial buildings designed by Leffland. Mitchell School (1901) and Victoria Colored School (1901) were commissioned at the same time and are similar in detail. Reverend Burrough's Cottage (1892), one of Leffland's earlier residential structures, is located on North Street. The Abraham Levytansky home (1898), the Leffland home (1900), and the J. V. Vandenberge home (1908), all large wooden residences in the heart of town, are typical Leffland designs with tripartite door and window arrangements, wrap-around porches, and double entrances on two sides. Shortly before his death at the age of seventy, Leffland became a citizen of the United States. He died on October 21, 1924, at his home in Victoria.

In 1983 the Victoria Regional Museum Association received into the McNamara House Museum's permanent collection a sizeable gift of rolled sets, plans, presentation drawings and miscellaneous materials from the Jul. Leffland and Son Architectural firm. In honor of the City of Victoria's 175 Year Anniversary a selection of the Leffland drawings in our permanent collection, as well as drawings from local lenders will be on display at the Nave Museum.
Jul. Leffland was an eclectic architect, a versatile and flexible draftsman. He designed churches, courthouses, jails, schools, commercial buildings, hotels and private residences. The Gulf Coast region from 1880-1910 was a growing and prosperous area, and Jul.'s daybook lists plans for buildings in towns such as Bay City, Beeville, Cuero, Edna, Goliad, Hallettsville, Kingsville, Refuglo, San Diego and Wharton. Working in a variety of materials (wood, brick and stone) his architectural abilities were unexcelled.
Jul. was the sixth of eight children born to Carl Wilhelm and Julia Wilhelmine Leffland on September 9, 1854 at Usserod, a suburb of Copenhagen, Denmark. Following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather, who were architects in the Usserod and Lyngby areas of Denmark, Jul. attended the Institute of Technology of Copenhagen from 1874-1879. On November 14, 1879, he married his first cousin, Emilie Sophie Struck of Copenhagen. After his graduation from the Institute of Technology of Copenhagen Leffland worked in the offices of an established Copenhagen architect and eventually organized his own architectural office before emigrating to the United States.
Early in 1886, at the age of 32 years, Jul. Leffland arrived in Victoria, Texas by rail from New York, leaving behind in Denmark his wife Emilie and four daughters, Ingebar, Edith, Kristine and Rigmore. Two years later they arrived in Texas, where three more children, Kai, Maude and Paul were born. The hurricane of August 1886 which destroyed Indianola, Texas initiated Jul.'s architectural aspirations in the new country, as he supervised the dismantling, moving and rebuilding of many of the homes from Indianola to Victoria after the storm.
After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in architecture, Jul.'s son Kai began working as a draftsman in his father's architectural firm, Architectural plans, presentation drawings and letterheads were printed "Jul. Leffland and Son" after 1910 and continued as such until Jul.'s death in 1924 at the age of 70 years. Jul. was made a citizen of the United States shortly before his death.
Perhaps an article printed in the Victoria Advocate dated April 17, 1905 captures the true essence of both the architect and artist whose pen transformed visions into precise renderings on linen.
Architect Leffland returned from Bay City last night. Some of our most elegant residences and public buildings were planned and erected under his personal supervision. They are ornaments to our city; for they are planned and constructed with reference to comfort, convenience of appointments and elegance of architectural designs, which none but a master architect, could conceive, plan and execute,
