Charles Grant Carlisle, 86, passed away on April 19, 2009 due to complications following surgery.

Grant was born April 13, 1923 in Millcreek, Utah, the oldest son of Charles Luther and Margaret Carlisle. As a young boy, his family moved to West Mountain where they owned and operated a dairy farm. Grant graduated from Payson High School and attended Utah State University. He served for 3 years in the U.S. Army in the South Pacific during WW II. He then went into the dairy business with his brother-in-law, Lee Rindlisbacher, founding Town Pride Dairy. Grant accepted a call to serve the Lord in the California mission. Upon completion of his missionary service, he married Lylia Porter on May 24, 1949 in the Mesa, Arizona Temple. They made their home in Payson and continued in the dairy business. In later years, Grant worked for the Nebo School District and McMullin's Orchards.

He enjoyed gardening, hiking, and fishing the lakes of Payson Canyon and the Uinta Mountains.

Grant is survived by his wife, Lylia Carlisle, and their eight children: Linda (John) Holmes of Richland, Washington; Calvin of Concho, Arizona; Marvin of Ogden, Utah; Shanna Stevens of Jerome, Idaho; Dennis (Darlene) of Genola; Susan (Roger) Tuckett of Spanish Fork, Utah; Jeff (Julie) of Spring Lake, Utah, and Daren (Renee) of Reston, Virginia; 30 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. Grant is also survived by I brother and 4 sisters: David (Elaine) Carlisle of Salt Lake City, Utah; Margaret (Orval) Wilson of Salt Lake City, Utah; Helen (Read) Black of Provo, Utah; Ila Peterson of Orem, Utah; Lois (Ernie) Moore of Milwaukie, Oregon. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Joann Carlisle Finch, and 3 brothers: Gerald, Elmo, and Ivan.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, April 23, 2009, 11:00 AM at the Payson West Stake Center, 780 West 500 South, Payson. A viewing will be held Wednesday, 6-8 PM at Walker Mortuary, 587 S 100 W, Payson. A viewing will also be held Thursday, 9:30-10:30 AM at the Stake Center. Burial will be in the Payson City Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, Grant's family suggests donations be made in his memory to the Boy Scouts of America at www.utahscouts.org.

The family would like to thank Dr. David Bennion, the nursing staff of Mountain View Hospital, and Alpine Hospice for their loving and gentle care of Grant during the last months of his life.

Lylia Gladys Porter Carlisle Nelson was born 16 June 1930 in Chino Valley, Arizona, the fifth child of Cyril Vickory Porter and Gladys Vivian Despain.

Lylia’s early childhood was spent in Heber, Arizona. She was only five when her father passed away but she remembered sitting on his lap and learning to sing. That was the beginning of her lifelong love of music.

Her growing up years were not always easy. There were lots of chores to be done as she helped her mother and brothers, and they grew to be a strong loving family, having lots of fun along the way. After moving to Prescott, cousins joined in that fun.

Lylia began music lessons when she was six years old and by the age of ten she was playing the piano for Primary. After being taught to play the organ, she was the ward organist when she was 16. For most of her life she was either playing or directing music.

Lylia met her future husband, Grant, in 1947 on his first day in the mission field, as she often helped the missionaries with music. She and Grant wrote to each other during his mission. When he was released, he came back to Prescott with his parents who had come to pick him up. Grant proposed, she accepted, and with her mother’s approval, they were sealed in the Arizona temple 24 May 1949. Leaving her family behind, she moved with Grant to Payson, Utah, taking her music with her. She was welcomed in to the Carlisle family and her new home.

While helping to raise eight children, she continued to serve in the Church and community, accompanying small groups, wards choirs, singing in choirs, and being part of a trio with two of her best friends. She began teaching piano lessons in 1951 and for nearly 40 years, she shared her love for music with her students. Many of her grandchildren were blessed to be taught by her.

After becoming an empty nester, she worked as a Chapter I reading assistant at Taylor elementary school. Of course, she was always ready to help with anything musical at the school.

The temple was always a special place for her; she had some of her most precious moments there. During the dedication of the Provo temple, she was part of a group who sang in the celestial room. She and Grant worked together in the baptistery in the Provo temple. That was one of the most beautiful experiences they shared together.

Grant passed away April 2009 after nearly 60 years together.

Lylia was blessed with another loving companion when she married Carl Nelson, a longtime friend and music lover.

Lylia has now gone home to join her parents, siblings, one great granddaughter, Kaylee, and her beloved Grant. She leaves behind her husband Carl and her eight children: Linda, Calvin, Marvin, Shanna, Dennis, Susan, Jeff, and Daren. She also leaves behind 29 grandchildren, 57 great grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild.

She has been a loving and faithful example to us all. She will be missed and loved by all who knew her.

Graveside services will be held Monday, August 24, 2020 at 10:00 am at the Payson City Cemetery, 400 North 800 East.
