Notater - Our mother, grandmother, aunt and friend, Merlyn Yates Kjar, 86, passed away on July 20, 2016, in the presence of her family after waging a valiant fight against cancer.
Merlyn was born to Nephi and Erma Yates in Salt Lake City on October 16, 1929. They lived in Murray, Utah. Merlyn graduated from South High and later worked at Freed Finance and Hayes Brothers Buick.
She married Edward Kjar (Ted) on July 28, 1951 in the Salt Lake Temple. They lived in Holladay, Utah where they raised their children, Todd and Jennifer Kjar. She cherished spending time with her children, grandchildren and nieces and nephews. She liked to travel and read, but she especially loved working in her fruit and vegetable garden which was always beautiful.
Merlyn was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and served in many callings throughout her life. She enjoyed her callings as a teacher and presidency member in the Young Women's and Relief Society auxiliaries, and later served as the ward Chorister. Her greatest joy in service came when she served as an ordinance worker in the Salt Lake Temple, where she served for over 13 years. She dearly loved those she served and those with whom she served.
She was preceded in death by her sweetheart husband, Edward Kjar (Ted). She is survived by her son, Todd Kjar (Jennifer), daughter Jennifer Kjar, grandsons Joseph and Samuel Kjar, and granddaughters Ashton Bruno and Sarah Kjar. Merlyn was also preceded in death by her parents Nephi and Erma Yates, and sisters Donna Anderson and Elinore Anderson.
We would like to thank Sonnie and Barbara from Good Shepherd Hospice for their loving care.
A graveside service will be held at the Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park, 3401 South Highland Drive, Salt Lake City at 10:00 am on Saturday, July 23, 2016. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Huntsman Cancer Institute.
