    • Nelda was born in Idaho Falls on Nov. 17, 1925, the ninth child of Ellen Saphronia Phillips and Charles John Zitting. Her mother passed away when she was 2 months old.

Her Aunt Carrie raised her and was always referred to as mother. Nelda lived with various family members in Idaho and California until meeting her husband, Ralph Hill, and settling in Lamont, Idaho. They had four children whom Nelda loved deeply: Delores, Marvin, Steven and Kalle.

Because she lived with various family members and attended over a dozen schools during her childhood, Nelda made an exceptional effort to keep her family together and in one community. As a farm wife, she managed the home, organized family outings, drove grain and hay trucks, bucked hay, tended animals, often worked out of the home and above all loved to attend her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren's school events.

Living far in the country, hunting and fishing were essential activities, and Nelda was always the first to admire fine deer, elk, trout and especially salmon. These were never trophies -- they were meals, and oh, how well she cooked them.

After 55 years together, Ralph passed and she moved from the Lamont country to Kuna, Idaho, near Steve and Kalle. She quickly became well-known in Kuna and involved with the senior citizens of the community. For the first time ever, while in her 80s, Nelda joined a local health club and not only attended but also transported many of her friends to the club. Some years following that she returned to Ashton, where she enjoyed visits with family and friends of all generations. Nelda came from good pioneer stock and was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She had a love for church history and served in the Family History Center in the Ashton Stake.

Nelda is fondly remembered for her distinctive laugh. Her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and friends also recall the many games of Chinese Checkers, or "the marble game," where she yielded mercy to no one, regardless of age. At the time of her death, she had 15 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. In her later years, she became a resident of the Ashton Memorial Nursing Home. She was loved by the staff and residents and was considered a favorite by many.

Nelda returned home to her Heavenly Father on June 26, 2012, holding the hands of loved ones.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph, and daughter, Delores.

Nelda loved life but accepted death and had no regrets that we know of. She left us proud, peaceful and quiet. We will always love her.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 3, at the Ashton LDS 4th Ward Chapel with Bishop Jim Hawkes conducting. The family will visit with friends and relatives for one hour prior to services Tuesday. Interment will be at Pineview Cemetery under the direction of Baxter Funeral Home.
