Helen Delores Durand, 96, passed peacefully in her sleep at St. Lucas Care Center in Faribault, MN on August 13th, 2017. Visitation and memorial service is scheduled for Monday, September 25th at St. Paul's Episcopal Church (South Cedar and Mill Street) in Owatonna. Visitation will begin 10am at the church, with a memorial service starting at 11am. A light lunch will be served following the service. A private family burial will take place at Rice Lake Cemetery. The youngest of five, Helen was born in Minneapolis on December 21st, 1920 to Carl and Anna (Anderson) Lundberg. She graduated from Minnehaha Academy in 1938 and from the Minneapolis Business College in 1940. She married Joel Blomberg in February 1943 & resided in Long Beach, CA until Joel's death in 1956. Returning to Minnesota, she married her childhood sweetheart Rene' Durand in August 1956 and settled in Owatonna. She was active in her Owatonna community: She founded the Domestic Science Club, was president of the League of Women Voters, served on both the Owatonna School Board and the Planning Commission, and was elected the MN 1st District Chairwoman, representing MN as a delegate to the National Republican Convention in 1972. She was elected president of the Women's Club of Owatonna in 1976. A member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, she served in many areas. One of her favorite activities was sharing her talent on the piano during the Church Nursing Home Service. We will all remember her for her New Year's Eve parties, organizing skills, amazing fudge, caramels, tender pies and how there was always a cup of coffee & fresh cookies awaiting a visitor. Helen is survived by her daughter Bonnie Norman of White Salmon, WA; her step-daughter Annette (George) Fiddler of Warrenton, VA; grandchildren James Norman (Angela) of Portland, OR and Carolyn Fiddler of Arlington, VA; nephews Robert Olson of St. Louis Park, MN and Brian Durand (Robin) of Minneapolis, MN; and niece Sue (Dean) Busse of St. Peter, MN. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Dorothy (Warren) Peterson of Faribault, MN, who was an almost daily visitor in Helen's final years and Helen referred to her frequently as 'my angel'.' Helen is preceded in death by her parents, siblings, first husband Joel Blomberg and second husband Rene' Durand. Special thanks to both the staff at St. Lucas Care Center in Faribault, who became part of her family in Helen's final years and Alcera Hospice for the support given to both Helen and her family. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a children's charity or the donor's choice.
