Notater - Van Doren Rathgeber, Jr, 87, passed away Sunday, January 24, 2021 in Round Rock, TX. Van was born in Ft. Worth where he attended Paschal High School and went to TCU where he met his wife, Barbara Beeman Rathgeber. He moved to Houston to stay in 1965, where he and his family settled in Hedwig Village. Van was an active member, Sunday school teacher, and youth counselor at St. Philip Presbyterian Church for many years. While his career was in computers and electronics, his passion was sports and the outdoors. He was a playful, caring father and husband, always volunteering to coach his kids' sports teams, eagerly planning the next trip, and actively pursuing his hobbies.
In Boy Scouts, he discovered sailing and earned his nickname, Skipper. His other hobbies were soccer, kayaking, scuba diving, and wind-surfing. He was always busy whether it be in the kayak club, the underwater photography club, playing tennis with the church group, or basketball with the youth group. He played soccer into his 60's and softball into his 70's. Van and Barbara were fortunate to travel the world, both loving to learn about other people and cultures. Van never met a stranger.
Van is predeceased by his wife, Barbara Beeman Rathgeber, and is survived by his son, Van Rathgeber III and wife, Anna Korhonen; daughter Linne and husband, Gene Atteberry; daughter Karen and husband, Chris Hale; granddaughter Elizabeth and, husband, Chris Hardegree; grandson Brian and, wife, Sarah Atteberry; sister, Faye Willis and her extended family; and six great grandchildren.
