Stanley Matthews
Stanley Eugene Matthews, 89, Soda Springs businessman and resident, died Tuesday, May 30, 1984, at his home following a long illness.
He was born May 22, 1895 in St. Francis, Kansas, to Guy E. and Alice Irish Matthews.
He married Fern Bullock March 31, 1917 in American Falls. She died in 1940. He married Helen Zitting Jan. 5, 1942 in Huma, Louisianna.
He was raised and educated in Boise and also attended Links College of Business in Boise. He lived in American Falls for a short time, moving to Soda Springs in 1919 where he had since resided. In June, 1914, he was the private secretary to D.W. Davis, who later became governor of Idaho.
He worked for First National Bank of American Falls, Brown and Moench in American Falls, and was a partnership with A.W. Kerr. In Soda Springs he went into his own business and S.E. Matthews Financial Agency and was also in the newspaper business for three years. He served as mayor of Soda Springs for 17 years. He was a 32nd degree Mason in the Soda Springs Masonic Lodge with a membership of 62 years. He was a Shriner for 62 years as a member of the Scottish Rites Valley of Pocatello and of Elkorah Temple of Boise.
Survivors include his wife, Soda Springs; two sons, Robert Matthews, McCammon; Stanley E. Matthews II, Soda Springs; three daughters, Mrs. Alyuce Franzen, Fremont, Calif.; Mrs. Darla Lowder, Salt Lake City; Mrs. David (Cindy) Trimble, Kansas City, Mo.; 24 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; two brothers and a sister, Earl C. Matthews, Dale Matthews and Mrs. Ed (Lucille) Gould, all of Boise. He is preceded in death by a daughter, Mrs. Joanne Beck, and two brothers, Newton and Guy.
Funeral services were Friday at Allen Funeral Home. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery.
